Jonathan Perlin, M.D., Ph.D., president of clinical services and chief medical officer at HCA Healthcare, recently participated in a podcast for the Federation of American Hospitals (FAH), the national representative of more than 1,000 investor-owned or managed community hospitals and health systems in the United States.

Hospitals in Focus with Chip Kahn, the FAH president and chief executive officer, is the new podcast series featuring audio interviews with experts on current or important healthcare topics.

Dr. Perlin was one of the first guests on the podcast and explores how HCA Healthcare uses its scale and data to identify trends and make improvements to care practices that positively impact more lives.

“The opportunity of scale is not just to have more size,” Dr. Perlin said in the episode. “It’s to accelerate learning and improvement. We view this as both a privilege and responsibility and are pleased to have been able to rally the data by-product of more than 30 million patient encounters every year in helping better inform improvements and outcomes in childbirth, the prevention of life-threatening hospital-acquired infections and the control of sepsis, one of the most challenging diagnoses that can afflict patients,” he added.

Listen in below or here as Dr. Perlin describes how HCA Healthcare-affiliate hospitals are utilizing big data, algorithms and artificial intelligence to drive advances in childbirth, sepsis, and MRSA (Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus).

HCA Healthcare 50th Anniversary
In 1968, HCA Healthcare was conceived by two physicians and an accomplished business leader — Dr. Thomas Frist Sr., Dr. Thomas Frist Jr., and Jack Massey. This year, HCA Healthcare celebrates its golden anniversary and the culture of caring established by our three founders 50 years ago. To help us celebrate our 50th year, we’ll share stories here that reflect HCA Healthcare’s mission – above all else, the care and improvement of human life – and our pledge to improve life and make history for the next 50 years and beyond.
