HCA Healthcare Heroes: labor & delivery nurse helps others create families – in more ways than one.

Labor and delivery nurse Lisa Jones has dedicated her life to helping others build their families.

Lisa Jones, a gestational surrogate-turned-labor and delivery nurse at HCA Houston Healthcare Clear Lake, has dedicated her life to helping others build their families. Good Morning America dubbed her as the “incredible nurse” who “births babies for those who can’t and delivers them for those who can.”

“For a good bit of time, I was helping create families with my own body,” said Jones, who has carried babies for women who couldn’t do it themselves. As a nurse, “now I get to help create families with other people.”

Before Jones launched her nursing career, she helped make families complete by giving birth to six happy and healthy children.

“It all started when I was 20 years old and newly married,” said Jones. “My cousin was dealing with infertility, and, after talking about it with my husband, we offered to be their surrogate. I had the ability to help someone I love achieve their greatest dream; why wouldn’t I do everything I could to help?”

In the end, her cousin decided to adopt, but Jones’ desire to help never went away. After having two biological children of her own, now in their twenties, she revisited the idea of surrogacy.

“Dealing with infertility means a lot of heartache and sadness. Helping people heal from that heartache is a joy for me,” Jones said. “I compare it to being a living organ donor. You give a part of yourself to someone else, and you get to see how it benefits their lives and the difference you have made. It’s amazing.”

Jones carried, via surrogacy, twin girls for Matt and Melissa Carter.

Each baby Jones helps bring into the world – as a surrogate or a nurse – is special. She even moved her family earlier this year from North Texas, where she worked at affiliate Medical City Fort Worth, to Houston specifically for her “dream job”: a labor and delivery nurse.

When offered a position at Clear Lake, a place where she was born and where her mother had also been a nurse, Jones couldn’t turn it down.

Lisa Jones has a special connection to this hospital’s hallways. Years ago, her mother was also a Clear Lake nurse.

“My mom walked these halls,” she said, “and it’s so important for me to be here, in the HCA Healthcare family, and also at this facility. I feel so connected to this place, and I’m so grateful to be a part of helping to create families, albeit in a different way, at Clear Lake.”

“It’s a dream for me.”

Jones is the epitome of an HCA Healthcare Hero. She selflessly gave of herself to restore hope, faith and joy to many parents struggling with the dark seasons of infertility.  As a nurse, she employs compassion in her daily interactions, using her experience to guide new parents through the thrill of parenthood.

As we close out National Nurses Week and head into Mother’s Day weekend, we’re thankful for a nurse and mom like Lisa Jones for caring with purpose and making a positive impact in the lives of our tiniest patients and their families.

Jones has been a surrogate for three families, giving birth via surrogacy to six children total.
