HCA Healthcare teams up with the American Red Cross

We’re proud to announce that we’ve teamed up with the American Red Cross as part of their Annual Disaster Giving Program (ADGP), providing the highest level of support to preparedness and relief efforts across the country. HCA Healthcare’s partnership helps meet the needs of people affected by disasters big and small, anytime and anywhere across the United States.

In a proactive effort, HCA Healthcare has made a $500,000 contribution to help the Red Cross be ready before disaster strikes, enabling the humanitarian organization to spring into action with much needed assistance to help individuals and families in their times of greatest need.

Did you know?

Every eight minutes, the Red Cross responds to a disaster somewhere in the United States.

“We know firsthand the help Red Cross provides to people and communities during the most difficult times,” said Sam Hazen, HCA Healthcare’s chief executive officer. “HCA Healthcare’s culture is built on a deep-rooted belief in taking care of others while taking care of each other, and we are privileged to continue our support of disaster relief efforts by the Red Cross.”

“Every day, people turn to the American Red Cross for help in the face of disasters,” said Trevor Riggen, senior vice president, American Red Cross Disaster Cycle Services. “With the advance support of HCA Healthcare and its employees, the Red Cross can prepare individuals and communities for the unexpected and provide relief whenever and wherever disasters strike – whether it’s a wildfire, hurricane, home fire or other emergency. We are truly grateful for their annual partnership that helps ensure we can deliver our lifesaving mission each year.”

The Red Cross responds to more than 62,000 disasters each year—the majority of which are home fires. The Red Cross typically helps with providing safe shelter, hot meals, emotional support and resources to aide in recovery.  HCA Healthcare’s support allows the Red Cross to prepare well in advance by training volunteers, securing shelters, purchasing food and emergency supplies, warehousing materials in strategic locations and maintaining emergency equipment and food distribution vehicles.

HCA Healthcare, and its colleagues through an employee match program, have a long history of partnering with the Red Cross in its efforts to provide disaster relief across the country, including support for victims of earthquakes, floods, wildfires and other natural disasters.

HCA Healthcare over the last three years has provided $2.5 million in financial support to the Red Cross for hurricane relief efforts, including Hurricane Harvey in 2017 and hurricanes Florence and Michael in 2018. Along with hurricane relief support, HCA Healthcare has contributed more than $1 million to the Red Cross with funding going to capital campaigns such as bloodmobiles for mobile donations, the Home Fire Campaign to put smoke alarms in homes, and “Together We Prepare” disaster training.

And we’re not just helping the Red Cross respond immediately – our support also means the Red Cross can remain on hand to assist people as they recover and to help them prepare for the next disaster.

Hurricane Dorian relief

Through the support of ADGP partners like HCA Healthcare, the Red Cross was able to be  on the ground and take action to support communities in need as they cleaned up after Hurricane Dorian, which devastated many earlier this month.

Across the Carolinas, more than 265 homes were destroyed or suffered major damage. Across the Southeast, some 3,000 Red Cross disaster workers have:

  • Provided 38,300 overnight stays in Red Cross and community shelters
  • Served 173,900 meals and snacks with the help of partners
  • Distributed 20,700 relief supply items

Weeks later, families in the Bahamas are still reeling from Hurricane Dorian, which reached Category Five magnitude with maximum sustained winds of 185 miles per hour. Lingering over the islands of Abaco and Grand Bahamas for the better part of two days, the storm claimed lives, destroyed homes and devastated communities.

Volunteers with the Bahamas Red Cross helped to prepare people before the storm hit and are currently assisting with the recovery process. Some 90 tons of Red Cross and Red Crescent relief supplies arrived in the Bahamas to help evacuees in need of basic aid such as food, water, and emergency shelter. The American Red Cross also deployed 21 disaster relief specialists to aid in communications, cash and voucher assistance, field operations, information management, IT/telecommunications, operations support and relief services.

Give help and hope by supporting the American Red Cross

HCA Healthcare colleagues are now members of the Red Cross family, one of the largest and oldest humanitarian forces in the world.

We encourage our colleagues to get involved, and extend our care beyond the walls of our facilities and into our communities. From making an appointment with the Red Cross to give blood or volunteering to help your local Red Cross chapter, our time and talents can make a positive impact on people’s lives.
