Las Vegas PICU Nurse is Called to Care, Adopts Abused Patient

Many of you have heard that nursing is more than a career, it’s a calling. Well, a pediatric intensive care unit (PICU) nurse at HCA Healthcare-affiliate Sunrise Hospital and Medical Center in Las Vegas brings a whole new meaning to the phrase. Her name is Kristine Hafner, and her “call to care” resulted in the adoption of one of her patients.
The five-year PICU nurse at Sunrise is known to treat her patients like family. So it should come as no surprise to anyone who knows Hafner – an advocate for foster parenting – that she would nurse an abused 11-month old boy back to health and find him a loving home – her own!
Unfortunately, Hafner, in her “work” as a PICU nurse, has witnessed abuse from her purview at the bedside one too many times. But she also has seen the resilience of children; their miraculous will to live, and, after extreme violence and against all odds, somehow, remain kind, loving and whole. They bring a whole new meaning to strength, life and purpose, she said.
And now, the little boy who spent two months under Hafner’s care, will thrive for the rest of his life as her son.
