Each year, it is my great privilege and pleasure to present this special Nurses Week message. How I wish it were possible to tell the individual stories of all 87,000 nurses across HCA Healthcare. For within every nurse’s story, I know that we would find the “heart of the matter,” or what nursing is all about: compassion for the patients we care for every day and unwavering dedication to our profession.

This year marks the 50th anniversary of HCA Healthcare, and I invite each of you to join us as we celebrate with the theme “Improving life. Making history.” While we cannot tell every story, we can highlight many of the talented nurses who deliver care that exemplifies this theme and fulfills our mission: Above all else, we are committed to the care and improvement of human life. HCA Healthcare nurses encounter millions of patients every day and improve the lives of those patients by delivering care that makes an impact.

It is an exciting time to be a nurse at HCA Healthcare, and as I recall visits across the United States and the United Kingdom, I realize some characteristics of HCA Healthcare’s nursing community are the same everywhere: integrity, a commitment to teamwork, purpose and compassion. These are the attributes of HCA Healthcare’s nurses, and they drive our community and advance the practice of nursing from the bedside to the boardroom.

In my travels, I am fortunate to witness the inspiring work and exemplary patient-centered care delivered by our nurses and care teams in different locales and settings. Our patients and your clinician, physician and other colleagues across HCA Healthcare recognize that the work our nurses do is important. HCA Healthcare celebrates all nurses in all care settings — hospitals, surgery centers, physician offices and urgent care centers — as the faces of our mission and the role models that show us each day what delivering excellent care to patients truly means.

As HCA Healthcare celebrates Nurses Week, my hope is for all nurses to celebrate each other, their colleagues, their teammates and themselves.

In the video below, take a look back at how the care we’ve provided through the years has never aged. Happy Nurses Week!

HCA Healthcare 50th Anniversary
In 1968, HCA Healthcare was conceived by two physicians and an accomplished business leader — Dr. Thomas Frist Sr., Dr. Thomas Frist Jr., and Jack Massey. This year, HCA Healthcare celebrates its golden anniversary and the culture of caring established by our three founders 50 years ago. To help us celebrate our 50th year, we’ll share stories here that reflect HCA Healthcare’s mission – above all else, the care and improvement of human life – and our pledge to improve life and make history for the next 50 years and beyond.
