Jonathan Perlin, M.D., Ph.D., president of clinical services and chief medical officer at HCA Healthcare, recently joined the Federation of American Hospitals (FAH) podcast “Hospitals in Focus” with Chip Kahn to discuss coronavirus and its impact on hospitals across the country.

Dr. Perlin’s conversation with Kahn details what makes the coronavirus different from previous epidemics, the extraordinary mix of challenges associated with this pandemic and the lessons we are already learning. He further illustrates how HCA Healthcare’s scale provides many advantages when it comes to learning fast, scaling information and contributing to the care of our nation during such a critical time.

HCA Healthcare is proudly serving as a national resource by sharing its data and experiences throughout the country with the Centers for Disease Control, departments in Health and Human Services, FEMA and academic researchers to detect outbreaks in communities, help understand risks in particular patient populations and identify components of treatment that confer benefit to patients.

“The privilege of scale in a system like HCA Healthcare with 2,200 sites of care is really the ability to learn at speed,” Dr. Perlin shares with Kahn. “As we look at what’s going on around the country, COVID is surfacing, but not in all places at all times. Pockets in Northern California and a suburb of Atlanta were the first sites in which we, at HCA Healthcare, saw patients with COVID. And we were able to learn from the experiences and take those learnings and broadcast them out to the rest of the system.”

Dr. Perlin explains how HCA Healthcare is able to synthesize a great deal of information very quickly. When guidance from federal agencies is being pushed out every few hours, it’s invaluable to have teams dedicated to working through that information and getting it in the hands of our front line providers.
