Last week, Watson Health announced its 2021 Fortune/IBM Watson Health 100 Top Hospitals award honorees, naming 16 HCA Healthcare hospitals to the list. HCA Healthcare’s Continental Division/HealthONE and MountainStar Healthcare, a part of HCA Healthcare’s Mountain Division, also ranked among the list’s 15 Top Health Systems.

IBM Watson Health publishes the esteemed lists annually, identifying top performance benchmarks that may help other healthcare organizations achieve consistent, balanced, and sustainable high performance. The studies used to determine the lists are based on a balanced scorecard of publicly available clinical, operational, and patient satisfaction metrics and data.

This year’s ranking of top hospitals introduced a measure of hospitals’ contributions to community health with a focus on equity, along with measures of clinical outcomes, operational efficiency and patient experience.

“The HCA Healthcare hospitals and health systems recognized on these lists reflect the collective dedication of hospital leadership, nurses, physicians and other support staff who provide great care while doing everything in their power to advance equity, safety and quality in the process,” said Dr. Jonathan Perlin, president of clinical operations and chief medical officer at HCA Healthcare.

“It’s a great honor for our colleagues to be recognized for excellence across our organization – with care sites ranging from community hospitals to medical centers providing tertiary and quaternary care, as well as hospitals that facilitate teaching for medical residents, nurses and others,” continues Dr. Perlin. “I’m very proud of our colleagues who have used HCA Healthcare’s scale to accelerate learning in normal times as well as in a very urgent manner throughout the pandemic, improving care for all patients.”

Five HCA Healthcare hospitals were also recognized on the list as Everest Award winners: St. Mark’s Hospital, Parkridge Medical Center, Lone Peak Hospital, St. David’s Medical Center, TriStar Centennial Medical Center.

The Everest Award recognizes the boards, executives and medical staff leaders who developed and executed the strategies that drove the highest rates of improvement, resulting in the highest performance in the nation at the end of five years. In 2021, only 20 organizations achieved this level of performance.

“HCA Healthcare’s mission is ‘Above all else, we are committed to the care and improvement of human life,’ and it has never been more critical,” said Jane Englebright, senior vice president and chief nurse executive at HCA Healthcare. “Prominent national recognition on the 2021 Fortune/IBM Watson Health 100 Top Hospitals list serves as a testament to our colleagues’ dedication to providing innovative and patient-focused solutions.”

“I send my deepest gratitude to HCA Healthcare nurses and other care providers who show humility, compassion and resilience every day, especially in the face of adversity this past year. Thank you for showing up and providing hope to our patients in ordinary and extraordinary times.”

The 16 HCA Healthcare hospitals on the 100 Top Hospitals list were selected after a thorough assessment of 2,675 short-term, acute care, non-federal hospitals in the United States. The performance indicators included survival rates, patient complications, healthcare-associated infections, 30-day hospital-wide readmission rates, length of stay, throughput in emergency departments and ratings from patients.

The 100 Top Hospitals represent HCA Healthcare teaching facilities and large, medium and small community hospitals throughout our organization, including:

IBM Watson Health identified the 2021 15 Top Health Systems based on a rigorous evaluation of 324 health systems and 2,522 hospitals that are members of health systems. This year, two HCA Healthcare affiliate systems were recognized as a 15 Top Health System:

  • (Large Health System) HCA Healthcare’s Continental Division, which includes HealthONE (Denver, Colorado) and Wesley Healthcare (Wichita, Kansas)
  • (Small Health System) MountainStar Healthcare (Cottonwood Heights, Utah) a part of HCA Healthcare’s Mountain Division

This is the inaugural year on the 15 Top Health Systems list for MountainStar Healthcare and the second year that our Continental Division has been named to the list.

“To be recognized as one of the best health systems in the country once is an exceptional accomplishment. To be recognized twice exemplifies the consistently superlative efforts of our hospital teams,” said Sylvia Young, president and chief executive officer of HCA Healthcare’s Continental Division.
