Dr. Erika Hamilton Appears on CNN to Discuss American Cancer Society’s New Breast Cancer Screening Guidelines

Dr. Erika Hamilton, Associate Director, Breast Cancer and Gynecologic Cancer Research Program at Sarah Cannon Research Institute – the research arm of our global cancer enterprise, Sarah Cannon – was featured on CNN today regarding the American Cancer Society’s new screening guidelines just released. New screening guidelines state that women should begin getting mammograms at age 45 instead of 40 and all women can forego routine manual breast checks by physicians. One of the reasons surrounding these changes are that mammograms have a fairly high false-positive rate and the chance of false-positives increase under age 45 as women in this age range have denser breasts and tumors are harder to identify.
Dr. Erika Hamilton addresses these new recommendations and discusses the importance of mammograms in detecting breast cancer, emphasizing the impact early detection can have on treatment plans.
