In honor of National Doctors’ Day, we want to acknowledge the physicians across HCA Healthcare and around the nation for their contribution to patients and communities. As Dr. Michael Cuffe, president of HCA Healthcare’s Physician Services Group has said: “being a physician means being a servant first.” And the anticipated physician shortage looming for the United States – up to a 120,000 physician deficit by 2030 – will make it more difficult for patients to receive the care they deserve.

Dr. Cuffe, recently sat down with Chip Kahn, the president and chief executive officer of the Federation of American Hospitals (FAH), to share how we plan to answer this national call for physicians.

Dr. Cuffe is witnessing the impending physician shortage firsthand, as he oversees more than 10,000 providers, physician strategy, and our organization’s Graduate Medical Education (GME) programs.

Already the largest provider of graduate medical education in the country, HCA Healthcare expects to double its number of GME training programs within five to seven years.

With more than 31 million patient encounters each year and 185 hospitals, 1,200 practices and 138 urgent care clinics, HCA Healthcare’s opportunity, according to Dr. Cuffe, is to not only address the physician shortage but approach GME differently through scale efficiencies and cooperative arrangements with academic institutions.

Listen in here to learn how HCA Healthcare plans to raise the bar in graduate medical education, and in doing so, better prepare our nation’s young doctors to practice medicine in our evolving world to give people across our nation a healthier tomorrow.

We invite next-gen physicians to be a part of something unique and special. Click here to learn more about HCA Healthcare’s nationwide GME programs.

The Federation of American Hospitals (FAH) is the national representative of more than 1,000 investor-owned or managed community hospitals and health systems in the United States. Hospitals in Focus with Chip Kahn is the new podcast series featuring audio interviews with experts on current or important healthcare topics.
