HCA Healthcare employees care for our community every day in their work to develop and support technology to care for our patients. For the past two days, nearly 100 HCA Healthcare Information Technology & Services (IT&S) employees are going beyond the walls of our hospitals to use their skills to help our community. Thursday, April 12 was the first day of Hack for the Community, a 36 hour gathering of Nashville’s best visual designers and software developers to build technology for local nonprofits that will make an impact in our community.
HCA Healthcare first piloted Hack for the Community in 2014, benefiting eight nonprofit partners. Since then, Hack for the Community has more than doubled its impact, now benefiting 20 nonprofit agencies and powered by nearly 20 business partners and over 200 volunteers.
Participants from different industries brought their talents together to partner with local nonprofits to innovate and address community problems. By building simple technology solutions, our volunteers and community partners are improving service delivery, increasing efficiency, and expanding our collective community impact.
One example is Tennessee Respite Coalition (TRC), a community partner with a mission to enhance the quality of life for family caregivers through respite. TRC participated in Hack for the Community this year with the goal of creating a text messaging platform to update caregivers throughout their respite application process.. The simplicity of a single text notifying a caregiver that “help is on the way” can be life changing.
And, Hack for the Community is just the beginning. HCA Healthcare volunteers will deepen their engagement and service with these 20 nonprofit partners on May 8 with IT Community Day, a full day of service at 20 different locations to tackle additional IT and business needs of our community partners.
