Achieving the reputation or label as “best” comes with effort and intention. It’s no accident that HCA Healthcare’s Information Technology & Services (IT&S) has been honored once again by Computerworld as one of the 2017 Best Places to Work in IT, an award we’ve earned since 2009. We strive to be excellent at many, many things, including creating a workplace that measures up to the very best technology organizations in the world.

Walking the talk when it comes to Healthcare Inspired

Ask just about anyone in IT&S, even someone new on the job, what’s unique to HCA Healthcare’s IT department and they will probably say these two words: Healthcare Inspired. In our interview conversations and in our weekly virtual hallway meetings and in the stories we share with each other on our message boards, we talk about how the technology solutions we provide affects patients, how clinicians deliver care and how we are part of something big yet very personal, touching patient lives – someone’s mother, father, family member, friend.

One of the primary reasons we continue to receive accolades for our workplace is because we are more than a team of technical experts, over 5,000 strong located in 15 service centers, supporting HCA Healthcare’s healthcare environments from hospitals to physician practices to surgery centers all across the United States and beyond. We are a team of heroic and compassionate individuals who consistently go above and beyond to help others at work and in our communities. Inside the hospital they have made dreams come true, setting up gaming gear with internet streaming so a pediatric oncology patient could play with YouTube personality Markiplier. Behind the keyboard, they are problem solvers who find ways to reduce administration tasks for nurses, and they are innovators who apply natural language processing to help detect lung cancer earlier. In the community, they are getting dirty and partnering with local nonprofits like Habitat for Humanity to help provide affordable housing. You’ll find big-hearted techies donating hours of expertise to nonprofit agencies in local “Hack-a-Thon” type events, strengthening network security, training nonprofit personnel on Microsoft Office tools, and even building a twitter bot.

Scoring high marks according to employees, too

I firmly believe our Healthcare Inspired culture is what helps foster job satisfaction, and though I can feel the difference it makes when I walk through the halls in Nashville and visit IT&S colleagues in our various divisions, I have data to prove it. Each year we ask our employees to share feedback about our workplace on an employee engagement survey, and last year 89 percent of our employees said they would recommend our workplace as a great place to work and 94 percent said they are proud to work for this company. What’s more, 90 percent of employees said their work gives them a feeling of accomplishment, and 91 percent said they’re willing to contribute more than what is expected of them in their job. And when it comes to seeking healthcare, 90 percent said they would recommend HCA Healthcare facilities to family and friends for medical care. It’s clear the people of our organization take our Healthcare Inspired mantra to heart.

It’s all because of you

Congratulations and thanks to all who have had a part in growing and maturing the HCA Healthcare IT&S workplace into what it is today. It’s because of you that we have once again been honored with Computerworld’s Best Places to Work in IT award. We are both proud and humbled by the role we are able to play in transforming healthcare through technology, supporting caregivers, and ultimately, making a difference in patient lives.
