Welcome to the “Power of Partnership,” a series highlighting organizations HCA Healthcare collaborates with to support healthier communities. Through these strategic partnerships, we work to extend our impact beyond hospitals’ walls and serve as active, engaged members of the communities we support.
When disasters strike, response time and coordination directly impact outcomes. HCA Healthcare helps ensure the American Red Cross can provide access to care and critical resources during emergencies.
HCA Healthcare has supported Red Cross response efforts during major disasters, including hurricanes Harvey, Florence, Michael and Ian, as well as severe winter storms, tornadoes, and flooding events across the U.S. These events require rapid mobilization — from opening shelters to distributing supplies and supporting displaced families.
Through our participation in the Red Cross Annual Disaster Giving Program (ADGP), HCA Healthcare provides consistent financial support that enables year-round disaster preparedness and immediate response. This support helps the Red Cross pre-position supplies, train volunteers and quickly stand up shelters when disasters occur. Over the last decade, HCA Healthcare has contributed more than $15 million in funding to the Red Cross.
This long-standing HCA Healthcare Red Cross partnership plays a critical role in national disaster response efforts, helping communities prepare for and recover from emergencies.
Beyond disaster response, the collaboration also contributes to workforce preparedness. HCA Healthcare colleagues and future healthcare professionals — including those at Galen College of Nursing – gain exposure to real-world emergency preparedness and response. These experiences help build clinical readiness, adaptability and decision-making skills needed in high-pressure situations.
Together, HCA Healthcare and the American Red Cross demonstrate the power of partnership — supporting both immediate disaster response and long-term community resilience.
Watch the video below to hear from leaders at HCA Healthcare and the Red Cross as they share more about how our collaboration supports communities during times of need.
While large-scale disaster response efforts are a critical part of this partnership, its impact is also felt in the everyday actions of HCA Healthcare colleagues. Individual contributions — including blood donation and volunteerism — play an important role in community health.
Colleague spotlight: John Stone, Director of IT, West Valley Medical Center
For nearly three decades, John Stone has been a dedicated HCA Healthcare colleague at West Valley Medical Center. As the director of IT at the Caldwell, Idaho hospital, he helps ensure technology supporting patient care operates reliably. Outside of his role, John has made a sustained commitment to giving back to his community.
In March 2026, John reached a milestone of 85 blood donations through the American Red Cross. Over the past 25 years, he has consistently donated blood to help support patients and communities in need.
“Growing up, my dad — also a hospital IT director — donated regularly because he had a rare blood type,” John said. “I started giving in college but had to defer for a few years after living overseas. After I began working at West Valley Medical Center and my deferral ended, it was easy to get back into the habit since donating at work was so convenient.”
Did you know? Every two seconds, someone in the U.S. needs blood or platelets, according to the American Red Cross.
West Valley Medical Center hosts Red Cross blood drives once per quarter, making it easier for colleagues like John to participate. Blood donation remains a critical component of patient care, with each donation supporting lifesaving treatment for individuals across the country.
“One of my favorite features in the Red Cross mobile Blood App is the ‘Blood Journey,’ which shows where your donation goes. Living in Idaho, I’ve seen mine travel to hospitals across the country and even as far as Puerto Rico — but the most meaningful moments are when it ends up at an HCA Healthcare hospital in another division. It’s a reminder that we show up and care like family.”

John’s generosity extends beyond blood donation. He tutors youth in his community and organized a department clean-up at a nearby lake. Through HCA Healthcare’s YourCause program, colleagues can log volunteer hours, which are translated into a $200 care card that can be donated to charities.
Through individual contributions and broader partnerships, efforts like these support both immediate patient needs and long-term community health — reinforcing HCA Healthcare’s mission to care for and improve human life.
