Physician Services Group colleagues lend a hand in hospitals during Omicron surge

Many things set HCA Healthcare apart from other healthcare organizations; however, at our core, our greatest strength is our people.
As the Omicron variant ushered in sharp spikes in COVID-19 infections, hospitals across the nation grappled with high volumes of patients seeking testing and care. With a focus on front-line support, non-hospital clinicians from HCA Healthcare’s Capital Division stepped up to lend a hand to colleagues who work in hospital settings.
More than 100 Physician Services Group (PSG) team members volunteered to work extra shifts in our hospitals, outside of their normal hours, as the Omicron variant continued to spread. PSG colleagues supported our hospital colleagues when it was needed the most, amid industry-wide staffing challenges, high patient volume and increased numbers of COVID-positive healthcare workers needing to be absent to recover.

Across HCA Healthcare, PSG oversees practice and urgent care operations, physician employment, hospitalist integration and graduate medical education. In addition to managing more than 1,300 physician practices and more than 200 urgent care centers, PSG also provides oversight for nearly 300 resident and fellowship programs across 59 hospitals nationwide.
With an already high focus on the health and wellbeing of the communities they serve, PSG colleagues embraced the opportunity to use their skills in hospital settings during the Omicron surge.
Christen Cross, a registered nurse who serves HCA Healthcare patients at a family medicine practice in Blacksburg, Virginia, volunteered to support our hospitals in Southwest Virginia. “I have been a nurse for a long time, and now more than ever, we all need to pull together and help one another and support each other through this time,” said Christen. “We are all a team no matter what location we work at.”
Mia Savoy, a medical assistant with StoneSprings OBGYN in Dulles, Virginia, volunteered to support our hospitals in Northern Virginia. “When I saw the hospitals needed extra help, I was eager to assist in any way that I can,” Mia said.
“I signed up because I feel like we are all a team, and we need extra help right now. If I can help with the stress of the current situation, I am glad to do it,” said Kathleen Brady, a medical assistant with Appledore Family Medicine in Portsmouth, New Hampshire.
Bethanie Kelley, a registered nurse at Virginia Complete Care for Women, rose to the occasion to assist our Richmond, Virginia area hospitals. “When I saw the opportunity to help in the hospitals, I immediately wanted to volunteer. I want to do my part to help my fellow health care colleagues in any way that I can,” said Bethanie.
We are incredibly grateful for the dedication of colleagues like Tracy, Christen, Mia, Kelsey, Kathleen and Bethanie, who continue to deliver superior, patient-centered care while using their skills in new ways. Thank you to all of our PSG colleagues who have volunteered across the Capital Division to help meet patient care demands and alleviate some of the workloads among our hospital teams.
